What’s Included?
This chart shows exactly what is included in each set for each tent size. Each set includes both side poles and larger central pole(s). The quantities and lengths vary by tent size.
The Wooden Pole Sets are naturally round, strong poles, not weakened by machine rounding. Species type is Pine; Scots or Corsican. These types are almost identical and share the same characteristics in terms of aesthetics, strength and durability.
From time-to-time Douglas Fir and Norway Spruce is felled, but far less commonly than Pine.
Choose From ‘Unseasoned’ or ‘Kiln Dried’
Depending on your requirements and budget, you can choose between Unseasoned or Kiln Dried poles. Each has their own merits:
Unseasoned Wooden Pole Sets
Considerably heavier than kiln dried at the beginning, and remaining slightly heavier after air drying.
Cheaper than kiln dried.
More environmentally friendly than kiln dried.
Many of our customers take unseasoned poles and let them air dry naturally, some by ordering early in the season and some literally on the job at the installations.
Air drying occurs within 5 weeks of continual use during Spring and Summer (3 months in the winter). Unseasoned poles will naturally lose about half their weight through air drying without compromise to their strength and durability. Once completed the air-dried poles will stabilise at approximately 30% moisture content (by contrast kiln dried timber are taken down to 15%).
Air dried poles left outside (particularly in the winter) may reabsorb some water from moisture in the air and so require a stricter care & maintenance regime.
Kiln Dried Wooden Pole Sets
More lightweight than unseasoned right from the beginning (about a third of the weight of unseasoned poles). This can be useful for some when transporting and handling the poles.
More expensive than unseasoned.
Less environmentally friendly than unseasoned due to the use of the kiln. Kiln dried is likely to attract a longer lead time as enough volume is required to justify firing up the kiln.
Some of our customers take kiln dried poles, particularly if ordering late in the season (as they would not be able to naturally air dry them). This gives peace of mind when it comes to storing the poles in colder months as unseasoned/air dried poles with a higher moisture content can attract surface moulds during storage which need to be dealt with.
How Long Will The Wooden Pole Sets Last?
Whether you choose unseasoned or kiln dried, with the right care the wooden pole sets can last for 10 years.
*The poles arrive ready-coated with Bird Brand Complete+ Superior Wood Preserver (clear). It’s recommended to reapply a further coat at the end of each season to help protect them during storage, with extra attention given to the the wider butt end of the pole in contact with the ground.
